What type of vehicles did our forefathers use in the 20s, 30s and 40s? How did vehicles evolve during the 20th century? Is the car my grandad drove in the museum? I am sure these questions spark your curiosity and I have no doubt you will find the answers to these questions when you vist our museum in Portomarin.
The museum has an eminently pedagogic character. More than 1000 model cars from different eras ( from 1881 to the present day) are on display. We specially focus on classic and historic cars which can be very interesting, not only for a newcomer in this matter, but the quality of the exhibits will make it equally worthy of the attention of any motor enthusiast. Walking through the museum, you can appreciate the changes through time, the sensational designs of the 30s, the out of proportion design of the 50s, the restrained Russian cars of the 60s, microcars, buses, Formula 1 cars and not forgetting Rally cars.
Visiting the museum is a unique experience. It is an exhibition that aims to transmit to generations the way these vehicles have been able to open our minds towards different cultures and new horizons. Both the history and development of the automobile from birth to here and now is exhibited here. It is a centre which only seeks the preservation and diffusion of our automobile heritage. A place where the model cars take us back in time, to maybe relive our childhood but more importantly it is a way of understanding the world of different eras.
Exact replicas of different cars showcased in typical everyday scenes. Here one can find cars, buses, vans, racing cars – all depicted in their respective era.
Delivery vans became very popular around the 60s. It is amusing to see them, not only because of the advertsing painted on them, but, because we can be trasported back to our childhood.
A small representation of some Formula 1 cars, not only the current ones, but, the “normal type vehicles” (improved) that were used for racing in the 20s and the “cigar type” cars that in the 30s and 40s won the GPs and, of course, the strange changes in the aerodynamics introduced in the 60s and 70s.
A small representation of the different types of taxis used in different countries around the world: from Tokyo to New York, New Delhi, London, Paris and Sao Paulo …. a worldwide tour guided by the most robust vehicles painted in the original colour of each country.
Not only is there a collection of some of the rally cars that participated in the Spanish Championships or the Rally World Championships, but there is also a scaled model of a stretch of the Monte Carlo Rally where some of these cars drove.

From the first horse drawn carriage with an engine to the spectacular 30s design ( true works of art worthy of being part of the most famous museums in the world), the stellar 50s design of the Americans, the most popular and attainable Eurpoean cars of the 60s and the colossal sports cars of the 70s … right up to designs of the present day and the concept car of the future.
The typical vintage bus our grandparents used to catch to go to the market, go visit the big city or maybe even the style of bus used to emigrate to France or Germany. From the time of upper deck seating to the typical metropolitan buses used today in our cities.
Here you will find various vehicles (both cars and vans) that at some time or other used to belong to various different police forces. The cars “most feared” (traffic police) when we saw them parked on the hard shoulder and we quickly checked our speedometer … to, of course, the “esteemed” ones when we need help.
Perfect reproductions of cars specially designed for endurance or mountainous circuits, all driven by race car drivers like – Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme or Graham Hill.
A display of 79 different models that appear in the “Adventures of Tintin”. Why this display? Hergé was a car enthusiast and during his lifetime he came to own various sport cars.
The exhibition is splashed with oldy advertisements appeared in newspapers and magazines. Surely some visitor will be taken back to the years of his youth when that “car” of the ad was an “unattainable desire”.
Lorries from the 30s up to the 80s, many of which you may remember motoring on unpainted roads ( way before dual carriage ways appeared) and if you are too young to have such a memory, the museum is the perfect time and place to learn about them.
The old tractors are especially striking because of the detail with which they were made. From the first models that came to Galicia in the late 50s and 60s to some more current.
Fire engines from the 30s up to the 80s. Works of art for their design and conservation which are also very pleasing to the eye.
“Cool rides” that competed in the famous endruance circuit “La Sarthe” from its beginning to the present day.
Part of the museum is dedicated to this “Big/Little” car, not only in 1/43 scale but all different sizes.
A great selection of toy tin cars, motorbikes and lorries, all typical of the time of our grandparents.
A stunning handmade diorama, 2 metres square, of the legendary roads in the Monte Carlo Rally.

MARTA B NOVOAgosto 24, 2022.Nos costó un poco encontrarlo, pero llamamos al chico y apareció en nada. Se porto con mi hijo de manera genial le contaba historias de los coches. A pesar de ser pequeño el local está lleno de curiosidades e historias de minicoches que traen nostalgia; los mayores también aprendimos un montón. El chico encantador. El precio no recuerdo si eran 2€ pero merece la pena la visita. Y no olvidarse de mirar la increíblemente maqueta echa a mano que recrea la escena de una película, parece real. También tienen pequeñas maquetas recreando momentos de otras películas que han hecho a mano y q incluyen los coches utilizados en las escena. Nos encantó y al peque al q más. Y no olvidarse firmar en el libro de visitas. Gracias 🤩
Julia FJulio 28, 2022.El chico que nos atendió es muy atento, sabe mucho de automóviles y de la historia de cada uno de ellos. La decoración es maravillosa, muy organizado y cada mes ponen cosas nuevas en la exposición. Muy recomendable, lo malo es que las instituciones no promocionen estas actividades culturales, donde niños y mayores podríamos aprender cosas tan interesantes como es la história de la automoción. Gracias por el trato que nos distes, volveremos.
